Square Enix and Epic Games announced today that they have agreed to work together on the next generation of games engine, codenamed Wave 3.
Wave 3, or W3G, will be the next major platform for game developers, with developers building next generation game engines for platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Xbox.
Wave 3 will be powered by the Unity Engine, a development engine developed by Unity Technologies.
Wave 1 of the Unity engine was used to create some of the biggest titles of the last decade including Assassin’s Creed: Unity and the hugely successful Mass Effect trilogy.
Wave 2 of the engine, which was originally developed by Electronic Arts and later bought by Square Enix in 2015, saw the company’s next-generation MMO game, EverQuest Next, hit the PlayStation 4.
Wave 1 and 2 were used by Blizzard Entertainment, Blizzard Entertainment of the PC gaming platform Blizzard Entertainment Inc., and other game developers.
Wave 2 will also be used for the next-gen game Minecraft.
The next generation engine will be used to make the game’s World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion, along with a new online-only MMO game.
Wave 5, the next wave of the Unreal Engine, is being developed to make a new game for Microsoft Windows called Project Scorpio.
This news is the latest in a long line of announcements made by Square, Epic, and Microsoft in recent years.
Microsoft has announced that it is partnering with Sony and Epic to create a new video game series, Halo 5: Guardians, with a cast of popular characters, including former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and actress and singer Kate Upton.
Microsoft also announced plans to develop a mobile-first game called The Order, which will bring together real-world business leaders from all over the world to tackle a common global problem.
The company is also developing a new “cloud-first” video game called Minecraft: Story Mode, which is set to debut in 2017.
Last year, Microsoft announced it was partnering with Google to create an Xbox-like virtual reality headset called Project Tango, a virtual reality game for both HoloLens and Xbox One that will be released in 2019.
Microsoft is also launching a new augmented reality headset, Project Hololens, for both Windows 10 and Xbox that will launch in 2018.
The new headset will bring the virtual world to life using the Microsoft HoloLens virtual display technology.
Microsoft recently unveiled its new video-game console, the Xbox One X, which has been shown off at E3 2017, and it will come with the same Microsoft Xbox VR headset.
The console will include the Xbox Wireless Controller, a powerful new controller for the Xbox VR that will give gamers an alternative to controllers on current-generation consoles.
